ADC-25c-2007-01UT

This is a moderately strong, unabraded die clash that is found on the Utah Statehood quarter.

The obverse shows a clash mark that was left by part of the smoke stack on the right engine to the left of the G in GOD.

The clash mark left by the hills is seen through Washington’s neck through the queue and into the bow. Also seen is the clash left by the railroad spike just below Washington’s ear.

The next picture shows that this is an actual dual die clash. Whether the dies did clash twice or this is the result of a single clashing of the dies, similar in action to machine doubling, is unknown at this time.

The top picture show the clash marks left by Washington’s queue under the word THE. The clash marks seen in the bottom left corner (also in the second picture in the middle) are again part of Washington’s queue as is the curl clash mark seen at the end of the railroad spike.

The last picture shows the clash mark left by Washington’s lower jaw line and upper neck.

One of the mysteries of die clashes is why there seems to be a rotation of the clashes when there is no rotation between the dies during the strike. This rotation can be seen clearly in the examination of the overlay at the top of this page. Notice the different horizontal planes the word LIBERTY (invert and mirrored) has compared to the word RAILROADS. This is not the only denomination that this has occurred in.

Our thanks goes to David Strzalkowski for allowing us to put this die clash on this site.
