A light line is seen through the TAT of STATES indication that an older clash event occurred in this area. Also seen is a line from the bottom of the E in UNITED that travels downward and into the Memorial building. Both clash marks are connected to the same clash event. The obverse clash marks associated with this event have been abraded off the obverse die.

Another older clash event took place in the area above Lincoln’s head. While the obverse die clash marks from this event have been abraded off that die, the clash marks on the reverse die still remain.

The die cracks from the top left corners of the E and R of LIBERTY may help identify these clash events.
