MAD Clashes

The Study of Unusual Die Clashes

Educational Die Clash - 01

This particular clash is found on a 1993P Lincoln cent, but is seen more predominantly on the 2000P Lincoln cent.

When this clash was first analyzed, it was thought to be part of Lincoln's beard that was doubled. Thus it was fitted into the doubled die category.

Billy Crawford, who at first agreed that it was a doubled die, did a series of overlays that showed that it was an actual die clash, with the originating design element being the statue of Lincoln on the reverse. CONECA, Coppercoins and NCADD followed in agreement that it was a die clash.

This was a case where even the experts were fooled. However, after the evidence became clear to exactly what this was, we all agreed to what the anomaly was.

The first picture (obverse of the Lincoln cent) shows clash marks  from columns 6 and 7 and the statue of Lincoln. Also seen is the clash left by the urn under column 10, under Lincoln's nose.

The reverse shows Lincolns chin, jaw line and throat area in bays 7 and 8. The last photo shows an overlay in relation to the clash marks found and the design elements that made them.

As I mentioned before, the first coin analyzed with this type of die clash was a 2000P Lincoln cent that showed only the clash marks left by the statue. To date, the only Lincoln cent dates to have this odd die clash is the 1993P and the 2000P.
